JOSEPH GATES was a convict who was buried in an unmarked grave at St. John’s Cemetery, Parramatta on 23 January 1792. His identity is not clear as this name recorded at the time of burial does not exactly match any convict who arrived in the colony prior to January 1792. If we assume that the surname was correct, there were two convicts with this name who arrived with the Third Fleet; JOHN GATES per Admiral Barrington (1791) and another per Atlantic (1791), both of whom were tried at the Old Bailey in 1789. Further research required.
